I’m a little obsessed with nature: I love being in the beach as much as I do the forest and high mountains. But when I really need to commune with nature to clear my head, there’s nothing like being high, up high on a mountaintop.
Getting stoned while hiking can be risky though; it’s not for amateurs especially if you’re climbing a mountain with sharp curves and narrow ravines. Use your head: the point is to feel alive, not die. I’ve been lucky enough to experience life at altered states in varying altitudes, and it’s a real life-affirming experience.
Marijuana lends its spiritual aspect to the climb and heightens the entire experience. It’s best for parts of the hike when you know you can afford to go on a relaxed, slow pace; when you’re passing through thick, lush vegetation or have just arrived at the summit and have time to chill out and take in the view while wrapped up in 20 layers of clothing. My friends and I have passed a joint around as a way to celebrate arriving at a stunning peak, or to wake and bake when you open your eyes and see the sunrise a couple thousand feet above sea level. It makes me feel #blessed. With the right hit, pot helps me focus more on the path I’m taking, makes me more observant of my environment, allows me to appreciate nature on a deeper level, and feel one with the earth.
If you have the opportunity to try climbing a mountain and getting stoned, I highly recommend it. Just don’t go overboard and smoke as much as you can – feeling lazy while on a climb is a real thing and this can be detrimental to your hike as well as to the others in your hiking group. Slowing down the group because you’re stoned is just… outright annoying and irresponsible. Remember that while on a mountain, timing is everything, every minute counts because you need as much sunlight as you can.
Start out with microdoses if you aren’t sure about your tolerance while hiking (but don’t ever be dumb and do edibles, concentrates, bong hits or anything crazy like that while you’re navigating a mountain). Smoke just enough to give you a buzz, and you can always take more when you have another stop. If you’re cautious about doing it because it’s your first time, you can always do so upon arrival to campsite, when you know that you won’t be moving around much and will have a chance to rest and socialize with others in your group.
If you have to sober up to get ready for a more challenging part of the hike, do it ahead of time. Eat food to lessen your buzz, and stay hydrated.
Pot will always be great post-climb, to help relieve those sore muscles (which happens to be just about every inch of the human body after a great hike) and help us go to sleep despite the pain. Going to sleep after a few tokes post-climb pretty much ensures that you’ll wake up feeling wonderful the next day!
My hiking friends and I love that pot is an excellent pain-killer; it sure beats taking painkillers and muscle relaxants. Why pop pills when you’ve got natural remedies that’ll make you feel good AND provide you with the pain relief that you need?
